‘Hero’ bystander dives off bridge, saves baby ejected into water after crash in Maryland

News & Politics

An unnamed “hero” saved the life of an infant who was ejected during a crash and into a bay in Maryland, after the good Samaritan dove off a bridge and into the water to rescue the baby.

What are the details?

The incident happened around 2:47 p.m. Sunday on a bridge over Assawoman Bay in Ocean City, when a collision caused one vehicle to teeter over the guardrail with the water 25 feet below, according to a Facebook post from the Ocean City Fire Department.

The Washington Post reported that a 1 1/2-year-old baby girl was thrown into the bay from that vehicle, but a quick-thinking bystander from a few vehicles behind the crash immediately jumped in after her — saving the little one from certain death.

Ryan Whittington, public information officer for the Ocean City Fire Department, told
WTTG-TV, “This good Samaritan’s actions — without a doubt, we can say — saved this child.”

The Sacramento Bee reported that “eight people were sent to hospitals from the crash scene,” according to fire officials. The infant was flown to John Hopkins Children’s Hospital in Baltimore, and the rest were transported to local hospitals via ambulances.

The identity of the person who rescued the baby was not immediately known, but whoever it was, Ocean City Fire Department assistant chief James Jester told The Post, “obviously he’s got hero blood in him.”
