Louisville mayoral candidate so close to being shot, there was a bullet hole in his sweater

A mayoral candidate in Louisville, Kentucky, came so close to being shot at his campaign office that he found a bullet hole in the sweater he was wearing.

The harrowing incident unfolded at about 10 a.m. Monday at the campaign office of Craig Greenberg, a Democratic mayoral candidate.

Greenberg told reporters in a media briefing that a man came to the door of the campaign office while he was there with two members of his staff and fired several gunshots in his direction.

“One of my teammates was standing to the side of the door and was able to get the door slammed,” Greenberg said. “Then he and other teammates that were closer to the door just threw tables and desks to barricade us in.”

That’s when Greenberg said that he found the hole in his sweater from the bullet that grazed him.

Louisville Metropolitan Police Dept. Chief Erika Shields told reporters that police responded to calls about the shooting and immediately cleared the building once they arrived.

News cameras later captured the moment that Greenberg and his staff were led out of the offices by the SWAT team.

Police apprehended a suspect in the shooting but did not release his identity to the public.

“We have no known motive at this time. We need to allow the investigators to do the appropriate work,” said Shields to reporters.

She would not answer whether anyone in Greenberg’s office knew of the suspect before the shooting.

Greenberg tweeted after the incident to let people he and his staff were unharmed.

“It’s not lost on me that the violence my staff and I experienced today is far too common in our city,” said Greenberg to reporters. “Too many Louisville families have experienced the trauma of gun violence. Too many in Louisville were not as blessed as my team and I were today to survive. Clearly, much more work needs to be done to end the senseless gun violence and make Louisville a safer place for everyone.”

Greenberg said he would not speculate on the motivation of the suspect behind the shooting until police come to a conclusion in their investigation.
