City of Miami holds another gun buyback with plans to give the firearms to Ukraine

The city of Miami, Florida, is once again holding a gun buyback with a twist — the guns collected during the event could end up being transported over to the war-torn country of Ukraine, where Russia has been waging a brutal attack since earlier this year.

People can score a $50, $100, or even $150 gift card if they turn in a firearm during the upcoming buyback this Saturday.

“The City of Miami has set up a voluntary gun buyback program to assist in providing safety and defense equipment to Ukraine,” according to a post on the city’s website. “Your donations will be used to assist the Ukraine support efforts. Receive a gift card starting at $50 for an old, unused, or found weapons, no questions asked. Do your part to make our streets safer.”

The post notes that people can receive a $150 Visa gift card if they turn over a “High-powered assault rifle (.223 caliber, AR-15, AK-47)” and they can get $100 for a shotgun or rifle.

“Turning in an undesired gun is a great way to take guns off the streets by preventing the potential of them falling into the wrong hands. Turning in a gun during the gun buyback … provides safety and security of knowing that the weapon will be properly disposed of or reallocated for use in support of Ukraine. It is also a great way to show your support in the fight against gun violence,” a frequently asked questions section reads.

Another buyback events was held in June, and during a press conference last month, City of Miami Commissioner Ken Russel of District 2 indicated that suitable guns from the buyback would be going to the police force of Irpin, Ukraine.
