A Pennsylvania man who already served time for torching his grandmother’s house has now been accused of harming another family member.
Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Pennsylvania State Police received word of a domestic disturbance in Chambersburg, about midway between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. When troopers arrived, they found a 69-year-old man holding a towel to his neck, and the towel was “dripping with blood,” according to the Daily Voice.
The unnamed injured man reportedly told troopers that he had been asleep on the couch when his son — 43-year-old Christopher Thomas Rhone, who also lives at the home — awakened him and began attacking him with a kitchen knife.
The bleeding man was quickly airlifted to a nearby hospital with severe injuries. According to reports, he had sustained “multiple puncture wounds and lacerations to the neck, head, and face.” The vertical slit in his throat was particularly worrisome, as witnesses described seeing “bubbles … in the wound with the inhale and exhale of the victim.” Thankfully, the man survived.
While medical teams attended to the victim, troopers quickly located the suspect, who was still on the property. Rhone was booked into Franklin County Jail and charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault. At a hearing on April 3, he was denied bond.
This arrest comes more than seven years after Rhone was arrested for setting fire to his grandmother’s house while the 85-year-old woman was still asleep inside. After she was awakened by the smoke alarm, Rhone reportedly admitted to his grandmother than he had started the blaze and warned her to get out. She and all other occupants exited the building safely, and Rhone later apologized to his grandmother for his actions. When his step-mother asked him why he set the house on fire, Rhone replied that it was “dirty” and that he “had to clean it.”
For that incident, Rhone was initially charged with felony attempted homicide, aggravated assault, arson-danger of death or bodily injury, and criminal mischief, as well as several counts of misdemeanor reckless endangerment. However, he was only convicted on one count of criminal mischief and served 666 days behind bars.
