Multiple people injured when Baltimore bus collides with 2 vehicles, occupied building

Multiple people were injured Saturday morning when a bus crashed into two cars and an occupied building, according to the Baltimore City Fire Department.

There were no life threatening injuries to any of the patients, according to the BCFD. An Incident Commander updated the status to a “Mass Casualty Level 1 Incident” because 16 patients required evaluation, care, and transport.

The multi-vehicle crash occurred at N. Paca St. around 10:20 a.m. The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Baltimore Police Department and the Maryland Transit Administration, the BCFD said in a Facebook post.

The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center received five patients, University of Maryland Medical System spokesperson Michael Schwartzberg told TheBlaze.

The University of Maryland Medical Center Downtown Campus Emergency Department received four patients, and UMMC’s Midtown Campus Emergency Department received three patients, Schwartzberg also said.

The Maryland Transit Administration CityLink Blue bus bus collided with a black Lexus and a Nissan before it struck the building at the 500 block of Franklin Street, according to CNN and the Baltimore Sun.

The occupied structure, reportedly an apartment building, was evacuated while the BCFD’s Special Rescue Operations and Collapse Unit assessed the situation.

“They condemned the first floor. We did a partial evacuation while we did an assessment,” Assistant Fire Chief and spokesperson Kevin Cartwright said, as reported in the Baltimore Sun.

The number of injured patients, initially reported as 16 by the BCFD, was later bumped to “at least 17,” WJZ reported. The bus driver was treated at the scene. He and 16 other injured people were transported to the hospital, Cartwright said, as CNN reported.

The Baltimore Police Department referred questions from TheBlaze to the MTA Police. TheBlaze reached out to MTA Police, but did not hear back in time for publication.
