Geraldo Rivera officially quits Fox News after being fired from ‘The Five,’ promises he’ll have ‘more to say’

News & Politics

Fox News correspondent-at-large Geraldo Rivera said he was fired from “The Five” and announced that he had subsequently quit the cable news network.

Rivera made the announcement in a video posted to Twitter. Rivera recorded the video on a “bumpy day on the North Atlantic” from a boat traveling from Jones Beach in Long Island, New York, to Manhattan.

“So it doesn’t look like I’m going to be on ‘The Five,’ I mean, I’m not going to be on ‘The Five,”” Rivera said in the video. “I’ve been fired from ‘The Five.’ And as a result of that. I quit Fox.”

Rivera said he’ll have more to say about him quitting Fox News on the Friday morning episode of “Fox and Friends.” He said that Friday’s appearance would likely be his last on Fox News.

Rivera captioned the video: “Bumpy day on the North Atlantic. Anyway, I got fired from The Five so I quit Fox. After 23 years tomorrow Fox and Friends could be my last appearance on the network. Thanks for the memories.”

Last week, Rivera revealed that he would no longer be appearing on “The Five.”

The correspondent, who turns 80 next week, said, “It’s been a great run and I appreciate having had the opportunity. Being odd man out isn’t always easy. For the time being, I’m still Correspondent at Large.”

“It has been a rocky ride, but it has also been an exhilarating adventure that spanned quite a few years,” he told the news outlet last week. “I hope it’s not my last adventure.”

Rivera told the Associated Press that his decision to leave the show was because of “growing tension that goes beyond editorial differences.” He noted that Fox News did not “race” after him to stay on the popular panel cable news show.

“I’m 80 years old. I don’t want the friction. ‘The Five’ is too intimate a place and it gets too personal,” Rivera said.

Rivera claimed that he was scolded by “The Five” host Greg Gutfeld over comments criticizing Tucker Carlson’s coverage of the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.
