Vox’s Kara Swisher Melts Down in Reaction to Trump’s Twitter Return

News & Politics

Anti-free speech podcast host Kara Swisher issued a series of nasty tweets after former President Donald Trump returned to X (formerly Twitter)

Swisher, the host of Vox Media’s On with Kara Swisher and formerly the New York Times’s Sway podcasts, posted on Thursday a screenshot of Trump’s first tweet since he was “permanently banned” in Jan. 2021 with the comment, “He’s baaaaaaaaack.” Swisher then proceeded to insult both Trump and his supporters, calling the latter “minions” and comparing Trump’s image to fictional villains. Swisher has previously endorsed increased censorship online.

Trump’s tweeted image of his mugshot was cropped, and Swisher evidently saw this as some sort of deliberate deception. “Shocker: His minions have Photoshopped out the jail symbol to the left,” she sneered, including the non-cropped mugshot.

“There’s really one perfect caption, right @BenStiller? BLUE STEAL,” Swisher continued, again tweeting Trump’s mugshot. She then added a GIF from a Scooby-Do cartoon with the comment, “Ok: Maybe this. Rut roh.” She was seemingly comparing Trump to a villainous-looking cartoon character in the GIF.

Swisher ended her screed by putting Trump’s mugshot next to an image of the villain from Ghostbusters II, Vigo the Carpathian. “Wait: It’s Vigo the Carpathian,” she posted.

Facebook “whistleblower” Frances Haugen came on as a guest of Swisher’s show in Dec. 2021, where both Haugen and Swisher proposed new censorship measures and critiqued a Facebook executive who made the case for free speech. Swisher also attacked new X owner Elon Musk for criticizing leftist billionaire George Soros and accused Fox News of spreading “misinformation.”

In Dec. 2022, The Twitter Files revealed what happened behind the scenes when the platform banned then-President Trump in January 2021. According to screenshots included in The Twitter Files, Facebook employees compared Trump to Hitler, despite internal assessments that Trump had not violated the platform’s rules. The Twitter Files’ exposé on the platform’s rule-twisting against Trump came soon after the platform’s new owner, Musk, restored Trump’s account.

Musk himself quote-tweeted Trump’s mugshot with the comment, “Next-level.”
