60-year-old homeowner orders suspected car burglars to get lost — then one starts shooting. But homeowner also has a gun — and responds with lethal force.

A 60-year-old homeowner in west Houston ordered a pair of suspected car burglars to get away from his property last weekend, but one of the perps apparently didn’t like that very much and opened fire.

However, the homeowner didn’t venture outside in the middle of the night without some protection.

Indeed, he also was carrying a gun — and employed lethal force in response.

What are the details?

Houston police told KTRK-TV the shooting took place around 3:30 a.m. Saturday at a home on Woodway Drive near Fondren Road.

Investigators told the station the homeowner spotted the suspects on surveillance cameras trying to break through his fence, and he reportedly approached the suspects and told them to leave. With that, police told KTRK at least one suspect pulled out a gun and started shooting.

The homeowner fired back and shot one of the suspects multiple times, police added to the station.

The injured suspect ran back through the fence and stopped at a stairwell, KTRK said, adding that officials said first responders took the suspect to a hospital where he died.

Police told the station the 60-year-old homeowner was shot in the leg, and he was at a hospital and cooperating with authorities.

The second suspect’s location is unknown, KTRK said.

“The other suspect … must have left with a gun because we can’t find the other weapon,” Lt. R. Willkens told the station. “And he did leave on foot. We have a decent video we’re working with.”

Police haven’t said if anyone will be facing charges, KTRK reported.

Anything else?

Police also told the station there have been several thefts and car break-ins in the area, which have caused neighbors to stay on high alert.
