MLB manager Terry Francona says thieves defecated on his scooter — 64-year-old then flew over the handlebars in crash

Major League Baseball manager Terry Francona has had a run of terrible luck related to his beloved scooter that he uses for transportation, with multiple thefts, a crash, and even thieves desecrating his signature mode of transportation with human waste.

The 64-year-old manager for the Cleveland Guardians is famous for riding around on his scooter in Ohio as his favorite method of transport since becoming manager of the baseball club in 2013.

Unfortunately, in his last year of managing, the scooter has become a source of despair. In January 2023 the scooter was stolen, with Francona reportedly telling police that he had parked it outside his apartment on a Friday evening. He said that he took the ignition key out of the scooter, yet it was still taken at some point in the night.

According to the Athletic, it was returned without damage.

However, the same can’t be said for the most recent theft.

Francona announced at the beginning of September 2023 that this would be his last season managing.

Not only did the most recent theft leave the scooter severely damaged, but: “They defecated on it,” Francona reportedly said. “I told the police when I talked to them, ‘If they bring back the death penalty …’” he joked.

Shockingly, the saga of bad luck did not end there.

Francona’s replacement scooter was an electric one, which was reported as being far less stable. On a ride home during a Cleveland Guardians home stand, the manager crashed his scooter in a pothole and flipped over the handlebars.

Flip-flops and dinner flying, the South Dakota native said his life flashed before his eyes. “It’s amazing how much you can see of your life in that moment,” he said before mentioning that he asked bystanders to check on his dinner when they came to his aide.

The coach has a bit of a history of bad luck. In 2000 his tires were slashed in Philadelphia, ironically on Fan Appreciation Day during his final year as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies.
