Biden’s ‘infrastructure’ bill spends more on electric vehicles than highways, bridges, and roads

News & Politics

When most Americans hear the word “infrastructure,” they rightly think of foundational physical structures such as highways, bridges, and roads that allow society to operate. However, for the Biden administration, those basic physical structures are merely a slice of the vast “infrastructure” pie — and a small one at that.

Many Americans may be interested to find out that President Joe Biden’s “American Jobs Plan” — consistently touted by the administration as an “infrastructure” bill — spends comparatively little on highways, bridges, and roads. Instead, the bulk of the massive $2 trillion plan is set to go toward other progressive initiatives such as electric vehicles and free community college.

What are the details?

According to a chart obtained by the Washington Post, which details the proposal’s spending breakdown, the administration plans to spend only $115 billion — roughly one-twentieth of the total — on highways, bridges, and roads, while spending $174 billion on electric vehicles, $213 billion on affordable and sustainable housing, $137 billion on public schools and community colleges, and $180 billion on climate-based research and development.

Other large expenditures include $111 billion for clean drinking water, $100 billion for high-speed broadband, and $100 billion for workforce development.

It could also be true that the administration is being intentionally vague in its summary descriptions of expenditures in the chart. Earlier reporting about the spending package stated that it would allot “$400 billion in spending to combat climate change, including $60 billion for infrastructure related to green transit and $46 billion for climate-related research and development.”

Additionally, it is expected to include universal pre-kindergarten, free community college, expanded child care, and a national paid leave program.

What else?

When announcing the plan on Wednesday, Biden said, “It’s not a plan that tinkers around the edges. It’s a once-in-a generation investment in America, unlike anything we’ve seen or done since we built the Interstate Highway System and the Space Race decades ago.”

“We have to move now,” he added. “I’m convinced that if we act now, in 50 years people will look back and say, ‘This was the moment America won the future.'”

Yet, “It’s about infrastructure,” he argued still.

Anything else?

In an op-ed in the Post explaining the plan, journalist Philip Bump aptly noted, “‘Infrastructure’ is one of those magical political terms that refers to something everyone supports but the boundaries of which no one agrees. It’s the sandwich of policy, something that everyone likes until you start getting specific about what you’re putting between the bread slices and whether a hot dog fits the definition.”

As for Biden’s “infrastructure” plan, Bump stated, “What it is, really, is the Green New Deal” wrapped up in politically acceptable terms.

  1. The communists do not want travel and interaction by citizens, but hey, ya got a new car, so stop bitching.

  2. Personally, I feel electric cars might be a thing of the future. But I also feel Biden is going about it all wrong. Let it happen with one car manufacturer competing against another. That way the prices would no doubt be a bit more affordable and people would be buying the vehicle they want instead of having these short range things shoved down our throats and driving something that simply isn’t practical. From reports I’ve read, I live in Arizona and if I were to visit my granddaughter in Northern Nevada, I’d have to stop six times and have the battery charged.

    1. I’ve seen the lines at the charger station in Barstow when I drove from San Diego to Las Vegas… 8-hour waits were not uncommon. We really do not have the electricity in place to do this. Pipe dream.

      1. I think you are right the only way electric cars will ever be useful is with a thousand mile range and overnight charging at motels ,rapid chargers sound amazing but very dangerous and expensive and our grid would need at least 3 or 4 hundred large nuclear power plants to supply the necessary power.

  3. Slo Joe ‘Staircase’ Biden’s first ‘Covid’ stimulus bill was 91% pure pork. With this ‘Infrastructure’ bill he is proposing, or I should say his handlers are proposing, will be another 95% pure pork. Taxpayers present and into the future will be paying for this for the next 200 years and still will not be able to pay it off.

  4. Electric cars take up more energy than gas cars. Biden and the democrats will tax you into oblivion with these cars too. What about all the batteries, where are they supposed to be disposed? Don’t trust these democrat dopes!!!

  5. In a warped sort of way this kinda makes sense. Since the electric cars are limited in terms of range, folks won’t need to travel as much or as far so there is no need to waste money on fixing roads and bridges. Problem solved! Never mind that if ya ain’t got your vaccine passport ya ain’t going anywhere anyway.

  6. They are handing out cash (supposedly) to pre-K(young families) and seniors (in home care) along with others to try and buy the MAGA votes away . Raising taxes only on wealthy my foot. Raising on every S corp. out there.
That would be most of the really small businesses; landscapers; brickers ; concrete men; framers; deckers; roofers; window washers; pool maintenance companies; lawn care; painters; All who are independent contractors
regardless of the industry. They have advanced legislation to destroy “Right To Work”. They want to unionize all trades to erase independent contractors. This is not an exaggeration. The THEY is the Biden Administration.
With the Trump tax cut you paid less out of each pay check. With Biden you will send them twice as much as you saved with Trump tax cuts.

  7. Electric cars or I should say the production of the electricity that is needed produces more pollution, if you consider that coal fired plants make up the bulk of electricity production. Nuclear plants produce their pollution with waste via spent radioactive rods that we honestly don’t know what to do with except encase them, bury them and ‘hope’ that nothing happens. We, also, have the problem of possible nuclear meltdowns if the cooling systems fail. The specialized batteries for electric cars are also toxic and the mining of the materials needed to produce these batteries are killing the environments where they are mined.

  8. So my 14yr old grandson said “how can we run our cars on electricity when we can’t keep the lights on”.
A true experiment in terror awaits us!

  9. “We have to move now,” China-Joe added. “I’m convinced that if we act now, in 50 years people will look back and say, ‘This was the moment Demoncrats destroyed America.’”

    THERE, FIXED!!!
