Cher slammed over George Floyd tweet: ‘Maybe if I’d been there…I could’ve helped’

News & Politics

Cher drew criticism and mockery online Friday evening over a tweet where she suggested that “maybe” if she had been present during the arrest of George Floyd the day he died that she “could’ve helped.”

What are the details?

“Was talking With Mom & She Said ‘I Watched Trial Of Policeman Who Killed George Floyd,& Cried,'” the legendary singer wrote. “I Said ‘Mom,I Know This Is Gonna Sound CRAZY,But.. I Kept Thinking …..Maybe If I’d Been There,…I Could’ve Helped.'”

The comment was met with backlash from followers, with one person accusing Cher of having a “white savior complex” while drawing comparisons to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and urging the singer to delete the post.

Another person reacted, “Um….Cher, I think you’re great and all, but this ain’t it. George Floyd’s murder isn’t about you. Don’t make it about you. And don’t inadvertently insult the traumatized witnesses who WERE there and did their damndest to save his life.”

“Oh yay another White person centering themselves around blk ppls pain,” someone else wrote, telling the singer, “I wish I was there to stop you from tweeting this.”

Someone else told Cher, “This might not be your intent, but you basically just called every bystander a coward in positioning yourself as the superhero who could have prevented this tragedy.”

But others came to Cher’s defense, with one fan replying, “Why is anyone mad at Cher? Most ppl who saw it thinks or hopes they could’ve helped. That’s why so many of the witnesses cry on the stand. If Cher uses her celebrity to help thanks.” Some folks said they had they had the same thought Cher did.

Witnesses testified this week during the trial of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, with some expressing their regrets for not doing more as the officer knelt on Floyd’s neck for several minutes during detainment. Bystanders pleaded for Chauvin to step off the handcuffed Floyd who was later pronounced dead.

Fox News noted that earlier this week, Cher had praised the witnesses who recorded and protested Floyd’s treatment during his arrest.

“Feel So Unbelievably Sad For The Brave Ppl Who Stood Their Ground To Bear Witness,& Chronicle The Murder Of George Floyd For All The World To See,” Cher wrote. “These Were Americans Who Didn’t/Couldn’t Walk Away From a Fellow Human Being Having His Last Breath…Crushed Out Of His Body.”
