Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) has a blunt request for Democratic strategist James Carville: “shut the f*** up.”
In a wide-ranging interview with Politico, Fetterman addressed the juxtaposition of his enthusiasm for President Joe Biden’s re-election and the president’s abysmal poll numbers.
“[T]hat doesn’t really matter,” Fetterman said of the polls. “There’s a whole lifetime in politics between now and next November as well. I’m not worried about that.”
“I’ll use this [as] another opportunity to tell James Carville to shut the f*** up,” Fetterman continued. “Like I said, my man hasn’t been relevant since grunge was a thing. And I don’t know why he believes it’s helpful to say these kinds of things about an incredibly difficult circumstance with an incredibly strong and decent and excellent president. I’ll never understand that.”
Carville, a key strategist behind Bill Clinton’s winning presidential campaigns, has been warning Democrats not to ignore Biden’s poll numbers.
In September, for example, Carville said that “somebody better wake the f*** up” in the Democratic Party and recognize that Biden is vulnerable to losing to Donald Trump in a re-match. In fact, Carville said that if the election were held today, Trump would be the odds-on favorite to win.
Carville doubled down on that sentiment two weeks ago, telling CNN he is “very pessimistic” about Democrats’ chances to win the 2024 election. And when asked if he believes Biden would lose the election if it were held today, Carville snarked, “Me and everybody else.” Carville also revealed in that interview that he believes it is possible Democrats will ultimately nominate someone other than Biden for president.
For his part, Carville dismissed Fetterman’s criticisms.
Carville told Politico that other Democratic senators “apparently haven’t gotten the memo yet” about his purported irrelevancy.
“His colleague Sen. [Bob] Casey asked me to host a fundraiser with him last week,” Carville explained. “Sen. [Sherrod] Brown asked me to go to Cleveland to campaign with him.”
